The Internet has opened up an astounding number of ways to market books. Over the next few months, your SPAWN site will offer a selection of customized Internet book marketing programs. The programs will benefit SPAWN members, whether multiple-book publishers with existing Web sites, or single-book publishers without credit card merchant status. This page discusses the first book marketing opportunities available to SPAWN members on http://www.spawn.org.

Free Single Page for Each SPAWN Member

As you know, each SPAWN member receives one free Internet Web page. At the suggestion of Jesse Weeks, a member from Hawaii, the member pages will soon be updated with clickable Email links. The clickable links will make it easier for anyone to send Email quickly to any member with an Email address on his page.
Since some SPAWN members already have Web sites, we will add a link from the free page to the member's existing site. Any member who Emails the address (URL) of his existing Web site will receive a link to that site address from his free SPAWN Web page at no charge. Send the information with your name and Email address to virginia@spawn.org. To eliminate typos, the information for this free link can be accepted only by Email, and we do request a reciprocal link to http://www.spawn.org on your Web site.

Small Publisher's Bookstore

The Small Publisher's Bookstore will be a separate section of the SPAWN site. The Small Publisher's Bookstore will be a well-marketed bookstore, bringing thousands of readers, writers, and other publishers to peruse your wares. The Small Publisher's Bookstore will offer an increasing number of book selling programs. The basic three are listed below.
1. One customized page with graphic and link to publisher's site. For members with existing Internet sites: one page containing one scanned graphic from the cover, up to 200 words of descriptive text, publisher's information, publisher's 800 number, and/or a link to the publisher's existing site. Cost: $50 setup, $10 per month maintenance, charged monthly on credit card.
2. One customized page with graphic and link to amazon.com. For members who want to sell their books through Amazon: one page containing one scanned graphic from the cover, up to 200 words of descriptive text, publisher's information, and a link to the sales order form for that book at Amazon. Cost: $100 setup, $10 per month maintenance, charged monthly on credit card.
3. Five customized pages with order form. For members who want to sell their books directly from the SPAWN site: five pages containing one or two scanned graphics from the cover(s), up to 200 words of descriptive text per page, publisher's information, and an order form. The descriptive text might include reviews, a chapter, an outline, etc.
There are two alternative types of order forms:
a. A printable, faxable order form. This order form will be a non-interactive order form, so this is a reasonable alternative for publishers who do not want to receive orders by Email. This method also works well for the publisher who prefers to receive orders by mail with checks. Cost: $200 setup, $20 per month maintenance, charged monthly on credit card.
b. An interactive order form which takes credit card orders on a secure server, then sends the order to the publisher by Email. Cost: $250 setup, $25 per month maintenance, charged monthly on credit card

Details

For all of the Publisher's Bookstore sites described above, the Webmaster will scan the cover and create the graphic. The Webmaster will accept text by Email or on PC disks in text files or Word files, then change the text into HTML and place the page(s) in The Small Publisher's Bookstore.
The Webmaster will generate publicity for The Publisher's Bookstore, including registering the site with over 100 search engines.
Please send book cover, credit card number, and all information in one package. Be sure to label your disks with name, phone number and Email address.

For every publisher who sets up customized pages before May 30, 1997, the first two months of maintenance are free. The charges being quoted by spawn.org are lower than any charges we have found on the Internet. The prices quoted above may change for later signups if the costs increase for spawn.org. New programs coming in future months will allow you to expand your offerings on the Internet.
