Research ResourcesUniversity of California Melvyl SystemThe University of California provides a catalog for books and periodicals in all of the UC libraries. You can use MELVYL to search by title, author, or subject. When you receive the list of publications on hand, you can see which of the UC libraries carry it. Researcher's Toolkit This is a list of lists, a good place to start your reaearch. Web Central's Writer's Resources This site gives writers an extensive list of resources, from the CIA Fact Book online to dictionaries to the Hacker's Dictionary. You will enjoy this excellent source of research sites! InfoSpace You can find U.S. government information here. You'll get details on County, Executive, Federal, House, Judicial, Municipal, ans State branches of government. Libraries U-Search You can search public access libraries all over the world by starting at the University of Saskatchewan Web site. The Internet Movie Database You can search the movie database to find the exact name of the movie, as well as the full credits and more details on most people in the credits. Internet Mailing Lists on Every Topic This is a comprehensive, but not complete, list of Internet Mailing Lists on many, many topics. When you join an Internet mailing list on a particular topic, you will receive every Email message sent to the list on that topic. You can decide to receive the Emails individually, or in digest form (one Email containing all of the messages for the day). Why would you do this? Because you can "listen" to experts talk about their subjects, you can ask questions and seek your research answers, and you can teach others about a subject. Just like neighborhoods, mailing lists vary tremendously in their tone and friendliness. For example, I left a technical writing mailing list very quickly, because it was filled with pedants who jumped on every comment and spent their time proving their own superiority to everyone. What a waste of potential! In contrast, I stumbled upon a list for small chicken farmers and fell in love with the people! They care for their animals and tell wonderful stories; they swap animal health care ideas. Best of all, they have developed a caring for each other. I, Virginia Lawrence, strongly recommend joining at least one mailing list on a topic of interest. You'll find yourself talking to like-minded people. You'll also talk to people who never would have crossed your path otherwise, yet may become an enriching part of your life. |
