About Your Title
A title is extremely important, so take your time in choosing one. It should be succinct. Someone who is looking for a book of this type should be able to locate it easily. Poor titles for a book of dog grooming tips for the novice might be, Beautify Your Neighborhood One Dog at a Time or From Ears to Paws. These titles might not be too bad if they had succinct subtitles. For example, Dog Grooming Tips for the Novice. One of my worst book titles is Quest For Truth. It doesn't say anything about the book, does it? And this book doesn't sell very well, either, even though when people read it, they are absolutely fascinated. One of my best selling books is, The Mainland Luau, How to Capture the Flavor of Hawaii in Your Own Backyard. The title is a bit long, but people know what they are buying. Another title that has worked well for me is, The Ojai Valley, An Illustrated History. Someone wanting to know more about the Ojai Valley will quickly choose this book over a book called, The Enchanted Land or Pink Moment Over the Topa Topas, for example.
Comparative Works
It used to be that publishers knew what books were out there and what was needed. A publisher who didn't, would do the research to determine whether there was a need for another book on gardening or Yoga or baseball card collecting. Now the publisher relies on you, the author, to do that research. The publisher wants your feedback about the current market as it relates to your book subject. Is there room for another book like yours or is the market inundated? What makes your book different than the books already available on this topic? It is up to you to find out and to share this information with the publisher.
